NEW CHINA NEW BOOK SHELF AND THE WAY WE LIKE TO LIVE

For several weeks we have been searching for some new bowls on our Saturday morning outings.

Some of our soup bowls have broken and we found ourselves constantly frustrated without

the same amount of dishes as we were use to. Im happy to say that last Saturday we finally found

some new bowls we really really liked.

Our every day dishes are mostly second hand finds that we fall in love with.

We have 6 of this and 4 of that and we prefer it that way.

We once bought a box of country yellow mugs with matching salad plates and for good measure

two additional plates with the same pattern but in green.

We have also found some unusually shaped pieces, including this ginkgo plate and cabbage bowl.

But most of all we like purchasing fun patterned pieces that we have learned

not to be afraid of and to enjoy using them every day.

We ended up paying $2 each at a yard sale for our new bowls,

we simple couldnt resist the pink thistle design.

Project Update and New Project platters

Hi Everyone,
Well, it was a lovely day today--there are birds chirping like crazy and the squirrels are running all over the place. I took advantage and went down to the wood shop and did a little work this afternoon:

I had a large piece of Phillipine mahogany left over from some other projects and decided to turn it into a platter and it came out really well:

Its a large shallow serving platter. It needs more sanding so thats on tap for later today or tomorrow.

I also hollowed out the large hickory bowl:

This is going to be a large bowl when its done. It has a lovely deep pink color and there is some spalting on the wood as well. This goes into the drying bag shortly.

And last of all, I have the mother of all wood chip piles in my shop at the moment:

I wonder how high this will get before it falls over?

Time to stop and make dinner (I wish someone would make me dinner) and get cleaned up. Im beginning to look like the wood chip pile!

New Hinges on Shaker Cupboard

Whew! Schools out for summer! Now maybe I can get back into the shop!

I did manage a little work in the last couple of weeks. Heres some shots of the cupboard with its new "antiqued" hinges.

And one of the cupboard in the sun, which happens every morning in the summer, and is exactly the situation in which the old, shiny hinges really bugged me. I am now much happier...

The other day I switched up the prints in the ombre frames

I was ready for a little change! Swapping out prints is one of the easiest ways to update a space.

I added a scalloped background ...

and Annabelles portrait got updated with a striped background!

New Offerings from Veritas

Tongue-and-Groove Accessories for Plow Plane

Veritas Small Plow Plane with 1/2-in. cutter and conversion kit installed.

One of my favorite, and most used tools has to be the Small Plow Plane by Veritas. I reach for it on almost every project I make and just recently, Lee Valley has come up with a few new additions to make this already great tool even better.
Veritas has introduced a series of Tongue and Groove blades along with a complete line of large size cutters. Up until this point the sizes ranged from 1/8-in. up to 1/4-in. Great for drawer bottom grooves and small scale cabinet work but this new line extends the range all the way up to 3/4-in. They’re available in A2 tool steel and only took a few seconds to polish and put to work. A simple conversion kit that easily installs on the existing plane make it possible to use this new, larger line of cutting irons.
This past week I’ve been making some moldings for one of the projects in my new book and if you’ve ever made moldings you know that the bulk of the work happens before you ever touch a molding plane. A series of grooves and rabbets are created to remove the bulk of the material before the hollows and rounds refine the profile. Just this morning I used both the new 1/2-in. cutter and then the 1/4-in. T & G to establish the profile on a piece of walnut. Once complete, it was quick and easy to define the shape with my Hollows and Rounds.
The change over from standard plow plane using the conversion kit was quick and easy with excellent results.

If you’re someone who would rather create your grooves with a hand tool instead of on a router table or table saw, then the Veritas Small Plow Plane, along with this new line of cutting irons will fill all of your grooving needs.

New Deck After almost 5 years

Ive been busy with all kinds of stuff of late, and not posting so I thought I would post photos of the latest project.

I had thought I would work with someone to build a replacement for the old deck I tore down before our sun-room was built, but after getting into the planning and getting quotes from contractors, I decided that I would have someone build it instead.

This is what we had when we bought the house in 1994. The screen-porch was 12x12 and the deck 8x15. By the time I tore down the deck, it was nearly falling down.

In 2007 the deck came down and the screen-porch got stripped down to become part of a new sun-room.

This is just after the sun-room completed. No pad underneath and the posts not clad yet.

This is my final design idea.

End of the first day, about half the framing done. If I were doing it, I would only have about a tenth this much done.

End of second day, the framing completed.

The decking arrived at the end of the day.

To reduce the up-keep, we decided to go with an aluminum decking. Turned out to not be any more expensive than the newer composites. With all the trees we have, keeping the debris cleaned from the openings between deck boards is a real pain. There are no openings with this material, so much less up-keep. It creates a water proof cover of the area below, but we are not using it for that property. We also have a problem with squirrels gnawing on the composite I used to build the front porch and walk, shouldnt have that issue with this.

Southern Industries/Archadeck of Augusta is the contractor and the product is AridDek from Wahoo Decks. We are also using aluminum railing from Wahoo Rail.

Tomorrow the decking starts to go down.
